Note: I totally made up this recipe. I didn't measure anything. At all. I did it all by feel.
Ingredients:
3 medium carrots
1 large apple
handful of dried cranberries
1. Cut up the carrots and apples. I thought about peeling the apples but decided not to. I did cut the core out though.
2. Put in food processor. I put the carrots in first and then the apples and cranberries. pulse until they are the size of large crumbs.
3. Put into a bowl and add the rolled oats. I would guess it was about a 1 1/2 cup.
5. Form into balls and then squash into patties. I didn't work at making them pretty. I found that at first they were quite loose but as I worked them they became more 'clumpy'. Next time I'd let the mix 'sit' for a few minutes to let the oats absorb the liquid. Put the patties on the rack.
6. Put the rack in the foodi and set it to dehydrate for 8 hours. That was a total guess but I figured to do it similar to beef jerky because of it's thickness. That seemed to be right. It could tolerate a little longer too.
I was thrilled to see that it worked. They didn't fall apart and were crunchy. But what would the critics think?

more please |
Those look pretty tasty! I bought my husband a dehydrator for Valentine's day (he loves making beef jerky) - maybe I need to borrow it! 😁
ReplyDeleteThere you go!
DeleteHow awesome! They look delicious.
ReplyDeleteThe horses LOVE them.
DeleteIrish has more of a mare face than Carmen Ha!! I’m going to look at my instant pot and see if it has a dehydration option. If so I’m going to try these.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure the Instant Pots do but not 100% sure
DeleteThey're saying, "We have molasses in our teeth but really don't mind the sensation." I baked treats recently (dried on the radiator) and my animals always spend a while licking their teeth afterwards.
ReplyDeleteThere is no molasses in Germany so baking for horses and people is a challenge.
PS my horse wants all future cores from your apples: )
LOL Guinness ate all the cores so there are non left. I heard that there was no molasses in Britain either. that seems horrible to me.
DeleteHow cool!
ReplyDeleteI was happy
DeleteGorgeous! and what a great idea. I would love to learn how to make a sugar-type cookie but stuffed with applesauce and pureed carrots, and then decorated with a sugar frosting like you see on those fancy horse treat websites. Do you have good recipe ideas for sugar type cookies for horses?
ReplyDeleteI have a great recipe for sugar cookies but not for horses.
DeleteTwo thumbs up!
ReplyDeleteTwo hooves too. :D :D
DeleteOhh, I make some very similar ones for Sophie. My little trick to make them stick better and cut down on the molasses is to add a tiny bit of hot water before baking/dehydrating so the oatmeal does its glue thing :)
ReplyDeleteThat makes so much sense! Thanks!
DeleteNeat idea! I've never had luck with any horse treat recipe I've tried, but all my horses have been pretty non-adventurous eaters.
ReplyDeletethese are pretty basic stuff- apples, carrots and oats so they may like them.
DeleteHow great that your Ninja Foodi worked so well. I have the blender and I love it for my green smoothies.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! They sound delicious!
ReplyDeleteThe horses love them!
