A New Addition

Ed and I had been discussing getting a second cat. A female who might actually want to hunt.

Unlike Martin. He hunts when the mood hits. In fact we're not sure if he just doesn't pick up mice that have died of natural causes and bring them home for credit.

With all that has happened Ed suggested that after Christmas we go to the shelter and pick up a kitten. So on saturday we went to the shelter and got this little love:

We named her Peach.
She was quite vocal in the cage and as soon as I picked her up she began to purr.

I love kitten toes

We brought 'her' home and she immediately imprinted on me.

Today I got a call from the Shelter. Turns out that we brought home a boy cat. Oops. I sent Ed a text. I also said that it's too late to return 'her/him'. All he said was, 'fine. I hope that he likes to hunt because we're not getting a third cat.  So we need a new name.

Since we got him she has been stuck on me like a little burr. For the first time in a while I found myself laughing out loud at  his kitten antics. His purrs are like little warm vibrations wrapping around my heart.

  1. This post makes me so happy. He is gorgeous!!! I hope he loves to hunt. :D The part about Martin getting credit for already dead mice had me giggling. I am no good at picking names so no help there sorry.

  2. Adorable! Females are supposed to be better mousers but I bet Mr. Peach will do just fine :) I can't think of a more creative name suggestion than Mr. Peach because it's Monday morning and I'm just getting a coffee now haha

  3. How about 'Peach Fuzz' ? I'm guessing the unusual tabby markings caused the shelter folks to think female, rather than taking a peek underneath. Keep us posted, he looks like he's going to be a lot of fun!

  4. Peach is beautiful and sounds like he is in love. Can't think of a male name that sounds like Peach but is manly enough for a great mouser. Good luck with your new kitty.

  6. Eddy is a pretty good mouser when he gets the chance (not too often, thankfully, since he is an indoor cat!). So maybe your new little fellow will turn out just fine as a hunter. I can't wait to meet him!

  8. I'm lousy at names so I'm not going to suggest one; besides, Peach was a great name and would be hard to top. Our best barn cats have been female -- the males are just too lazy. I'm hoping Mr. Peach is a better mouser than the boys we've had around here. :)

  9. Nothing like a purry playful kitten to help a broken heart!

Also, what''s wrong with three cats? I have three cats - I promise it doesn't mean you're crazy!! ;)

  11. Hi Teresa
I've been wanting to comment on this blog for several days now but was unable to do so due to my emotional distress. I was so heartbroken to hear of the loss of your gorgeous boy and as a horse owner, I truly do feel your pain and sorrow after such a horrific event. Now that I am able to write without crying I just want to tell you that I hope the healing process is a little easier every day. I also hope that this dear little kitten will bring you some comfort as he wraps his furry little paws around your heart. Please don't pay any attention to the negative people who write negative comments on your blog as they are speaking with ignorance and not with their hearts. They have no right to judge you until they've walked in your shoes. Of what value are horses, you ask? Words cannot begin to explain what they mean to me and so many others in this world. Take care of yourself, God bless, Jane

  12. I was only introduced to your blog after the loss of Steele.

My riding instructor shared the story on Facebook; and after reading the heartbreaking entry I then started with your first post, and laughed and cried my way through to the present and most recent post. I've read it all, in its entirety over the last couple days.

I can’t begin to fathom the loss and grief you must be experiencing, in the wake of such a senseless tragedy. I’ll admit I just finished December’s entries last night and proceeded to cry myself to sleep after again reading your story of losing Steele. He was magnificent. Truly an example of what magical creatures horses can be.

I’ve learned quite a bit from your stories (I am still a beginner in the horse world; I lease a horse from my instructor and just completed my Level One test on Friday. I’ve only been riding consistently a few years) about Steele’s training. Your post on the clinic with Steele is one that really sticks with me (I need to practice more outside rein instead of fiddling with the inside rein; hands down when things get funny; and to not lean myself forward at times) I am truly happy to have been able to read of your time and adventures with Steele. I thank you for sharing, and hope that you can find comfort in the memories by reading your own words in time.

You have a wonderful talent for both storytelling and photography. There are some photos I recognize as areas I love and have photographed myself. I get the impression we must not live too far apart.

I’m not sure what I really want to say; I was just deeply moved by your blog, by your story, and I felt I had to reach out. My deepest condolences, I hope you can feel the love and support from the many other people who have read and commented here. I wish you all the strength in the world in this difficult time.

  15. So glad your adorable new kitten has brought you a measure of joy and, perhaps, even a bit of internal peace. I hope 2015 is a blessed year for you and yours, you surely deserve it. Take care, Teresa.
