I was getting ready for a ride a few weeks ago at a bird preserve. Lots of grass as high, or higher, than Leah's head, land bridges with steep drop offs into the marsh, moose, steep, rocky descents. I was envisioning horrible things as I was loading Leah that morning, but I purposely stopped myself and myself envision the ride as a success. I thought through it and made a little movie. It turned out to be a huge success. I am constantly fighting back against negative expectations. The brain really doesn't interpret the negative. Example: when out on trail I'd come across a log I just knew Gem would spook at. I'd start thinking "don't spook at the log". But my brain really only captured the "spook at the log part" (There is some really interesting psychology behind this that I can't find to link to at the moment) so guess what? Gem spooked at the log. If I changed to "we will ride forward past this log" we would! I, too, use the active riding and asking for softness and relaxation right at the point where the horse may be struggling - always offering softness so the horse can take me up on it - no fighting.

Your last point is one Mark Rashid makes all the time - focus only on the thing you do want and not on the thing you don't want. His approach, which I use, is to completely ignore the spook (why I don't use the "make the wrong thing hard" approach - that's focussing on the wrong thing rather than what you want) and just keep asking for what I do want.

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8459505622378142466.post-37006409481305253752017-07-30T12:42:30.128-03:002017-07-30T12:42:30.128-03:00It is SO hard to relax when reapporaching a histor...It is SO hard to relax when reapporaching a historically spooky area knowing their likelihood to spook again. For me, plans and expectations are my favorite weapon against nervousness :)emmahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05686949099663199382noreply@blogger.com
